How safe is Coventry?
Coventry is located in the West Midlands, 19 miles southeast of Birmingham and 95 miles northwest of London. The ninth-largest city in England, Coventry also is ranked among the top 10 cities in the country for jobs and business growth.
Coventry has a population of approximately 350,000 and a workforce of 225,000. It is an ethnically diverse city, with over 30% of its population coming from ethnic minority backgrounds. Home to two large universities, the University of Coventry and the University of Warwickshire, Coventry has a total student population of 54,000.
But just how safe is Coventry?
There were 27,687 crimes committed in Coventry between April 2016 and March 2017. Of these crimes, antisocial behaviour was the most common, with 6,534 incidents reported, which is about 24%. The next most commonly committed offence was violent crime, with 5,467 incidents reported, or about 20%.
Criminal damage and arson is the third most common crime in Coventry, with 3,044 incidents reported (11%). Vehicle crime is the fourth-most-frequent offence, with 2,933 incidents occurring within this timeframe (10.5%). Burglary is next, with 2,722 crimes reported (10%), and this is followed by other theft at 1,971 offences (7%) and shoplifting, which stands at 1,880 incidents (6.5%).
